GIS Technician

Job Description:

The successful candidate will help improve productivity and efficiency by supporting all departments via Geographical Information System technology products. This position is also responsible for providing information to council members, staff, ratepayers and businesses. The GIS Technician will also provide guidance and leadership to ensure that the implementation of GIS within the organization continues to progress in a smooth manner.


General Duties


  • Support the Administrative, Transportation and Utility departments by creating various databases for the purpose of asset management, spatial analysis and delivery of final map products & solutions
  • Data collection with survey equipment for database updates
  • Creation of maps, graphs, spreadsheets and other information items for project stakeholders
  • Handle incoming locate requests for R.M. owned underground infrastructure
  • Perform preliminary construction surveys or elevation surveys
  • Policy recommendations
  • Oversee summer student GIS related jobs
  • Hardware & software maintenance & updates
  • Produce quality assurance and quality control data collection standards
  • Attend training and seminars on survey technology, ESRI products and latest GIS advancements to remain acutely informed & present pertinent information to council

Job Requirements:


  • A university degree in GIS or Geography or Computer Science; or a related two-year diploma in GIS with a minimum of three years of related GIS experience
  • Proficiency with ESRI ArcMap, ESRI Geodatabases & Microsoft Office Productivity tools
  • Working knowledge of ArcSDE & ArcGIS Server
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of GIS, spatial analysis and cartography
  • Experience with client-server GIS technologies & Web GIS / Web Mapping platforms is desired.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills as well as ability to conduct presentations
  • Excellent logical and analytical thinking. Ability to identify problems and create solutions.
  • Business analysis and project management training or experience, GISP Certification or ESRI Certification are assets
  • Proven leadership and organizational skills
  • Strong sense of self-motivation & attention to detail

The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Position will be based on working a 40 hour week.
