Wallace District Fire Department is a volunteer based organization that provides protective and emergency services for our communities and surrounding district. Station 1 is based in Virden and covers approximately 751 sq/km. Station 2 is based in Elkhorn and covers approximately 448sq/km.
WDFD requires 45 volunteers to operate with 30 being stationed in Virden and 15 stationed in Elkhorn. WDFD provides the necessary on the job training to become a nationally certified firefighter.
We respond to an average of 100 emergencies each year. These typically include structural, vehicle, industrial and wildland fires, farm accidents, grain entrapments, industrial accidents, vehicle collisions, water and ice entrapments, missing persons search, hazardous material spills, sounding fire alarms and the occasional special duty like helping a stuck child out of a swing or high chair. We train weekly to keep our skills and knowledge up to date to ensure we are ready for these responses.
In addition to response and training, both stations are actively involved in community events, fundraising events, and public education. We strive to be involved and help out our communities. We encourage any community member willing to help out to contact the fire station in your area to see if firefighting is for you. It is an experience that will stick with you for life.
Thank you for reading and have an awesome day!
